Salowa Energy Limited is a member of the Salowa Group of Companies. We are a new company that seeks to become a participant in Kenya's nascent energy sector. Our initial focus will be in the areas of renewable energy and petroleum. As other parts of the company develop, we will update our website with relevant information. We look forward to the journey ahead. |

Renewable EnergyWikipedia defines renewable energy as, "a socially and politically defined category of energy sources. Renewable energy is generally defined as energy that comes from resources which are continually replenished."Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun. Solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting, for generating electricity, and for a variety of commercial and industrial uses. From the sun's heat winds derive, and this too can be captured to generate energy. Winds and the sun's heat cause water to evaporate, which when it rains, flows downhill into rivers that can be captured using hydroelectric power. Along with the rain, sunlight causes plants to grow. Plants can be stored to make up organic matter known as biomass, which can be used to produce fuels that can be converted into bioenergy. Quite apart from the sun is the energy that is derived from the heat from the Earth's core - geothermal energy. Geothermal energy is produced by tapping the Earth's internal heat for a variety of uses, including electric power production. Salowa Energy Limited intends to explore how renewable energy can be exploited in Kenya with a view to benefitting from the favourable Kenya Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) feed-in tariff policy. |
PetroleumKenya has made no less than four 'wildcat' discoveries of oil in the Northern part of the country, and has announced that there is significant potential for the country to become a net oil exporter in the future. Meanwhile, the country is a net importer of petroleum products and petroleum fuels constitute the main source of commercial energy in the country.Petroleum products are materials derived from crude oil (petroleum) as it is processed. Unlike petrochemicals - a collection of well-defined usually pure chemical compounds - petroleum products are complex mixtures that are converted to include several classes of fuels. The petroleum industry is divided into upstream, midstream and downstream sectors. As long as there is oil exploration in Kenya, there exist opportunities for new companies such as Salowa Energy Limited to participate in the upstream sector of the industry. The company intends to explore these opportunities, with an initial focus on oilfield services. In addition, as long as Kenya and its neighbors - its most important trading partners - are importers of petroleum products, the opportunity to trade in imported products exists. As the future potential of the country's oil production develops, the opportunity to trade in Kenya's oil products with neighbouring countries will develop further. With this opportunity in mind, the company intends to participate as a trader in the downstream sector of the industry. In this latter respect, the company is in the process of obtaining an ERC license. As more information of how the company becomes involved in the petroleum industry emerges, it will be posted here. |
